Abirami, the protagonist of the story is the only daughter of a large traditional family in the town of Papanasam. As she is the only girl child in the family, she is being pampered and raised as the family's pet child. Abirami's paternal uncle leads the entire family. Her uncle is the decision-maker of the family, and he takes all the main decisions for the family. All other members abide by his decisions. Growing up in such a family, Abirami loses her individuality. Abirami's uncle starts making arrangments for her wedding as soon as she finishes college. As Abirami wants to go for higher studies, she is resolute about not getting married for the time being but is confused as to how to inform her family. She shares with her college friends Anu and Porkodi about her situation. Porkodi had got married while she was at the end of her third year in engineering and currently she is pregnant in her last trimester. Anu said she grew up alone in the hostel and got separated from her parents at a young age. She grows up to be more experienced and matured beyond her age, as she grew up alone. Meanwhile, Abirami's uncle decides to get married to Siddharthan, his distant relative who works in the United States. Abirami tells her friends about the groom that her uncle has seen for her. While Porkodi asks her to obey to what her family says, Anu insists that Abirami declares to her family members that she is not interested in marriage and wishes to go for higher studies. A highly confused Abirami at one point, tells her family that she is going to study further and does not want to marry at present. To that, Abirami's uncle assures that he would talk to the groom to plan for her higher studies in the United States after marriage and persuades her to get married. Abirami discusses the matter with her friends. Her friends try to influence her to handle the issue with Siddharthan directly, that she is not interested in the marriage, but, their attempt to convince Abirami is unsuccessful. Abirami is not able to talk or act against her family's decision and with no other option, agrees for her marriage. Her wedding takes place in a few days. After the marriage, Abirami realises that Siddharthan and his family are nowhere near her assumption, but are the ones who cling to old beliefs and customs.
